DIRECTIONS FOR USE
Sour Cherries:
For increased fruit spur development in yellows virus infested Montmorency sour cherries. Research trials in Canada and the U.S.A. have indicated that annual application of sprays of gibberellic acid can increase the fruit spur development in yellows virus infected Montmorency sour cherry trees. Growth of the vegetative shoots and subsequently the lateral shoots is stimulated thereby resulting in increased productions the following year. Rate: Dissolve 10 ACTIVOL tablets in 1000 L of water (10 ppm) and apply as a dilute spray to vigorous Montmorency trees, so as to apply 9 L of spray per standard tree. Higher rates (15 tablets per 1000 L of water) may be required for old and less vigorous trees. Add 250 mL AGRAL 90 (wetting and spreading agent) to each 1000 L of spray mixture. Time of Application: Apply from shuck fall (5-6 well developed leaves present) until 2 weeks after shuck fall. Conditions for best results: Best results will be obtained on young, vigorous trees. Better results will be obtained if cool temperature (15° to 20°C) and low relative humidity conditions prevail prior to spraying. Poorer results will be obtained if warm humid conditions prevail prior to spraying. Short cloudy periods during days which are cool and bright with low relative humidity will have no effect on results. Important: There will be no response in trees weakened by factors other than virus yellows, such as wet soil or winter injury. For correct diagnosis of virus yellows and further advice on the application of gibberellic acid, consult local agricultural authorities and fruit extension specialists.

Sweet Cherries: To delay ripening and improve fruit quality of red and black sweet cherries. Research in British Columbia shows that ACTIVOL delays fruit ripening 4 to 5 days, thus lengthening the picking period and delaying the period of susceptibility to rain cracking. The treatment also increases fruit size, firmness, and resistance to post harvest disorders. Rate: Dissolve 20 ACTIVOL tablets in 1000 L of water (20 ppm) and apply as a foliar spray to run-off 21 days before normal harvest. The fruit are straw coloured at that stage. Harvest when fruits are at the desired shade of red. Do not harvest within 21 days after spraying.

Rhubarb: To reduce the amount of exposure to low temperature necessary. To break dormancy of rhubarb roots prior to forcing. Research trials in Ontario, Washington State (U.S.A.) and Great Britain have shown that gibberellic acid applied to rhubarb roots prior to forcing substitutes for much of the cold exposure required to break the natural dormancy of these roots. This will allow an earlier start to be made in forcing the roots resulting in an earlier harvest season, and also a higher total yield and better quality of marketable sticks. By advancing, and speeding up the growth of the first crop in the shed, a grower has greater flexibility in timing of the second crop. Note: Research trials in Ontario have also shown that even where rhubarb roots have been subjected to the necessary cold exposure, the use of ACTIVOL is still of practical and economic value in producing earlier and larger yields of better quality sticks, than would normally be expected from roots having been subjected only to cold exposure.

Preparation of roots:Remove roots from field and store outside until prior to preparation for forcing. In preparation for forcing, follow normal procedure in the forcing shed. When roots are in place, hose over the crowns to wash buds free from soil so that ACTIVOL solution can be directed on to the plant tissue rather than surrounding soil. Allow a period for the wash water to drain, then apply ACTIVOL solution at the rate of 5 L to every 10 crowns, using a watering can and making sure that every crown is thoroughly wetted.

Preparation of ACTIVOL solution: Dissolve 1 ACTIVOL tablet in 5 L of cold water. Note: ACTIVOL solutions are unstable and should be used within 24 hours of preparation.

Following ACTIVOL treatment: Follow normal forcing procedure maintaining normal forcing temperatures. Higher temperature may inhibit the full effect of the ACTIVOL treatment. Consult local agricultural authorities for full management techniques.
