FLAT-OUT Antifoam agents comparison trials

General information:

FLAT-OUT DEFOAMER is a highly concentrated antifoaming and defoaming agent for use in agricultural and industrial spray solutions. It is more effective and aggressive than conventional defoaming products. It is easy to use and can be applied to spray solutions in a premix application or added while a tank is being filled to control foam formation or existing foam.

Objective:
Compare the performance of Flat-OutTM. Fighter F and Halt in controlling foam in a spray tank.


Test details:
Date: 19 November 1999
Antifoam agents: Flat-Out, Halt, Fighter F,
Formulated active ingredient: Roundup Ultra 2.5%,
Surfactant rate: Ammonium Sulphate (AMS) - 2kg per 100L (17 lb per 100 US gal)
Antifoam agents use rate: All antifoam agents used at 8 mL per 100 L (1 US oz / 100 US gallon)
Water hardness: 342 ppm - 21.4 grains / gal (Relatively hard water)


Method:
Identical amounts of water, Roundup Ultra and AMS were added to two separate beakers of hard water.
The mixtures were agitated for 1 minute with air pressure tubes inserted into the beakers to generate foam.
Antifoam agents were added to the mixtures and agitation continued until foam in one of the beakers disappeared.


Observations:
Foam was generated in each beaker prior to the addition of anti foam agents.
Flat-Out controlled foam more effectively than Fighter-F or Halt.

What makes Flat-Out different from other antifoaming agents?
Most antifoaming agents, including Halt, Fighter F and Flat-Out are based on the active ingredient dimethylpolysiloxane (polymethylsiloxane). Each product contains varying percentages of this active ingredient. Flat-Out contains 18% active ingredient while Halt contains 17% and Fighter F 10%. Controlling foam can vary significantly depending on water conditions, temperature, composition, viscosity, agitation, type of product that causes the foaming situation and other conditions; therefore rates for any antifoam agent may require adjustment for the most effective dosage.

Why did Flat-Out perform better than other products in these comparison trials? Flat-Out contains special emulsifers that allow the active ingredient to surround the foam bubbles and burst this water/air interface more effectively. Flat-Out has a unique formulation that will control foam where other products won't.
